Here it is… Holy week. Palm Sunday is upon us.
This story takes us through emotion after emotion. Picture how it begins. Jesus rolls into Jerusalem on a donkey, symbolizing peace, as His disciples line the street. The feeling is almost palpable, as I can only imagine the energy of his presence.
I mean, CAN YOU IMAGINE?! Here comes Jesus, y’all.
Now… picture this. Those same disciples lined His path with palm branches, laid out before him on the road. Here he was. In honor, the path that lie ahead for him was ornate with cloaks and leaves. They had followed His word and even found the donkey where he told them it would be. So cool. This week begins with such a vibrant beginning and ending, as bookends of this story.
Let’s just soak that in… let us revel in the goodness the start of His journey represents.
I have spent most of today envisioning this moment like a parade. Jesus would’ve cast candy towards the disciples, I am sure, if he rolled into town in this day and age. Now, if that doesn’t make you smile (even giggle), then I don’t know what would. Yay, Jesus.
I am raised Southern Baptist, but I have been many other denominations throughout my life. I have received many a palm leaf upon entry into church on Palm Sunday. What a cool visual for the parishioners. As if it were New Years Eve and the palms were streamers, they get raised and waved from the pews. A total biblical celebration.
Awestruck. Joyful. Exuberant. Let’s hang out here in these emotions for awhile, shall we? We all know what lie ahead on this Holy Week. THE BEST, happy ending; but the emotional roller coaster is not without its downturns along the way. So, yes… it’s Palm Sunday… let’s revel in that humbly and simply.
I miss the church so much today. I am longing to wave those palm leaves in the air as I have before. I even miss the uncomfortable pews of my youth. I miss the fellow believers. This is a pandemic, and this is Holy week. We shall overcome. We shall reunite. We shall let this week remind us of His glory. Let us see his resurrection; and let us believe in ours.
I learned something pretty cool “at” online church this morning (shout out to Fellowship Bible Church where I have “combined” all of my previous denominations into one:). Hosana, the word we sing in hymns and modern Christian jams, means “save us.” The streets, lined with His disciples, came alive with the elevations of voices. “Hosana in the highest”… the King had arrived.
Let us pause. Let us be present in our current situation as we reflect the past. Let us glorify His journey as we give thanks for our own.
Psalm 118:25-26
Lord, save us! Lord, grant us success! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. From the house of the Lord we bless you.
