I once was blind, but now I’m 20/20…

IMG_1376Happy New Year, y’all!  Out with the old and in with the new… Listen here, 2020, I hope that you spread joy to the world and peace in our hearts.

So, how did ya celebrate?   Did you attend a big party, like days of old?  Did you wake with the resolution not to ever, ever, ever imbibe again (no judgement here, by the way)?  Or, did you find your way to the REAL good times in your pj’s watchin’ the Time Square celebration?  Or, perhaps something in between…

In a quick Ten-to-One countdown, we are suddenly in a new year; the old one made so by only a moment in time.

We are filled with hope in that single moment.  We are standing in anticipation of what lies ahead.  We hug onto strangers… We cry… we kiss… we resolve.

When you think about it, moments are really all we have in this life.  Moments.  Some larger than others, of course, but still moments.

Often, it can feel as if the routine moments with our children go unnoticed.  Or, perhaps, it will be those moments that they remember most.  “Remember the time when…” or “Remember how hard we laughed at…”  or even “Remember how much trouble we got into when…”

Moments are like fireworks (can you #spotthecross in the image above?).  There is anticipation and awe followed by the fading into dark.  We cannot recreate a firework.  We cannot freeze time during the bloom and boom.  We can wait, watch, marvel, and hope to remember it just the way it was.

Let’s think about the “moments” of Jesus’ life, shall we?   Contrary to most of our moments, His seemed to last a lifetime; well past a boom and bloom.  Every single story seems to unfold in slow motion, even the images that arise while reading scripture of His life.  Slow.  Methodical.  Sermonized.

From Creation… to the Flood… to the Plagues… to Birth… to the Supper… to the Crucifixion… to the Resurrection… each one a “moment” in a larger story, yet lasting an eternity.

How then, can our moments be so brief?   So fleeting?  So boom and bloom?

If only we could freeze in time the moments we cherish, while conversely speeding past the moments we would rather forget. You know, truly, those WTF?! moments.

Undoubtedly there is purpose in our moments and the timing of them all… our faith determines how we navigate them.  Do we trust Him enough to savor the milliseconds in time which we call “moments?”

The fireworks bloomed on New Year’s Eve then faded away, leaving a trail of smoke and clouds.  Do we remember the bloom or the identical shadow of where it once was in sky?  Like the moments in our lives, the firework blooms then a lasting copy remains to remind us of its beauty.

So, bring it on 2020… eyes open, solid vision.  Faith in what rains from above will give us the moments that last a lifetime.  Buckle up, and toast to ‘em all… Cheers!

“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.”

James 1:17
