Holy Week, Hide and Seek…
Here we are, y’all… The week in which Christians converge in thought and in theory. We read the scripture, we digest the magnitude of the words, and we envision the actions that took place historically.
We are united in this week.
If you have given up (or taken on) something for Lent, you can see the finish line. You can smile in the sacrifice and accomplishment as a child of God.
We chose our clothing for church on Easter Sunday and plan our Easter dinner. For some, this is the only day all year that they find their way to the pew (Well done, ’cause some Jesus is better than no Jesus!). We color Easter eggs then organize a hunt in the yard. The children are dressed in their finest and set off to seek the golden egg. (WTF do we send nicely-dressed children out into the grass and dirt to seek Easter eggs anyway??)
Well… get this: the egg was once a symbol of the rebirth of the earth in the Spring. Then, the Christians came along and it symbolized the tomb of the Risen Christ, broken and freed from the inside. The photo here is of an egg from one of our backyard “Easter Egger” chickens. I found this blue/green egg in the coop decorated by a hay-made cross. Having learned the significance, I will never take brunch for granted again.
Do children know why they seek? Who they seek? or What they seek?
To seek, by definition, is to “attempt to find.” We spend a lifetime seeking Him. At times, angry at Him for hiding too well; and praising Him when he is apparent.
Imagine a child, one egg left in the yard… and it’s nowhere to be found. Imagine the parent~who cannot remember how many eggs they have hidden, so is there really even one egg left??… Picture the scene. It ain’t pretty. I know, because I have been that parent. Of course I have dogs and the #*@! egg is filled with chocolate, so can we just find the #*@! thing??!!
And, imagine the soul, seeking for Him… nowhere to be found.
“Warmer, colder, cold, HOT…” as the child seeks the egg. If only the soul who seeks could hear the same direction. Or simply trust the seeking.
So, there it is, folks. There before us, waiting to be celebrated. Unimaginable suffering… rising…and conquering death. The gift of everlasting life has been given. THERE is the Golden Egg, broken for us all. Let us rejoice in this week… let us remember the sacrifice… and let us continue to seek Him, even when He is hiding in plain sight.
