Free the Phone!

Hi, I’m Kitt and I’m a phone-a-holic.  Say it with me, because maybe you are too…

What a s#*+ show social media has been lately.  I hear that realizing the problem is the first step in changing a behavior.  I finally accepted my problem and took action. Too many times, I found myself in the midst of a written war of words with strangers and “friends.”  I could not leave well-enough alone.  I felt so strongly in my convictions, that I became the one typing faster than my brain could dispute the reader.

So, I did it.  Deleted the Facebook app from my phone.  Obviously, I did not delete my account all together (although I wish I could).  I get information regarding my kids’ schools and such.  Gone are the simple days of keeping in touch with friends.  I loved seeing photos of their children and connecting over memories from high school and beyond.

But, even that has changed.  I can no longer control my feed.  I get advertisements from pages in which I have never shown interest.  I have a lot of “friends,” but some sort of stupid@$$ logarithm hides most of them.

So… I freed the phone.  No longer do I stand in line at the grocery store scrolling through Facebook (shout out to Instagram for being a milder, kinder version).  No longer do I stew over comments which offend me.  No longer do I comment with unintended, unproductive opinions.  PS: I am doing my best not to fall off the wagon with that one.

I was once told that “you can’t argue with stupid.”  Either I am stupid, or the stranger I have unknowingly engaged is.  Freedom of speech is all jacked up these days.  We, as a population, have taken advantage of its purpose.  We have taken this particular freedom and screwed it up …causing division amongst our people.

Social media can be a breeding ground for hatred.  Why, in the name of God, do we sit behind a phone and expect for our opinions to be met with acceptance.  When did “agreeing to disagree” turn into “my way or the highway?”  How has blame taken the place of admitting our own ill-behavior.

Admittedly, I have had experiences via social media which have opened my perspectives.  I enjoy it when it is delivered in a mature manner.  It’s the vicious written attacks that simply suck. If we could accept differing opinions, we might just learn from them.

So, WTF is the matter with us?  When did we become so self-centered that we cannot even see beyond our own views?  How is it that one feels compelled to succumb to the distractions that the phone offers?

I offer you this suggestion:   Free the phone.  Delete the apps which make you crazy.  If Facebook is still your jam, then unfollow the pages (like the national news outlets) that distract you. Local news is where it’s at, people.  Simply give me the weather, sports, and less-biased news… well, hopefully, less biased news.

I admit, it is SO awesome.  Prepare for some withdrawls, perhaps even the shakes. But, it is worth it. I promise.

Life is too short for the nonsense that most social media offers us.

I will keep my Facebook account, however.  I will try to spread joy through it.  I hope to inspire y’all to “spot the cross.”   Follow Holy Kitt on Facebook and Instagram… I promise I’ll try to keep it productive and smile-producing.

Now, close this page and go clean up your “follows”… and stop counting your “likes.”  You are liked, (and loved by Jesus) and you don’t need a blue thumbs up to prove it. 😊

“Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.”

Ephesians 4:29
