Roots

Well, here you are.  You did it… Gave them roots, and gave them wings;  all at once.

Yes, I’m talking to you new college parent.  It feels a little presumptuous to even write a post about this, having never dropped a kid at college.  However, this year more than any other year, I have known more friends who have done just that.  I look at them with a knowing, yet unknowing heart.  I see their personal sadness at the same time as I soak in their happiness.  Perhaps their sadness comes from the empty space that their child once occupied in their home.  I sense that their happiness is rooted in the pride of the accomplishment of raising them.  I am inquisitive and empathetic.  Yet, still, I cannot truly know… yet.

Every tree has roots.  There is not an exception for family trees.  Some wither, some thrive…but, every single one began with roots.  Just the same God calls us to remain rooted in Him, we thrive as believers.  We grow taller, sprout leaves and grow further in Him.

Alas, WTF does time go so quickly?  How do some trees have roots that expand vastly underground, living for hundreds of years?  While, on the other hand, some trees last for merely 18 years?

The roots are there, hidden underground, and protected by the earth.  The branches change; they grow, they bend, and sometimes they even break… But, the roots remain… just as His love does.  And, just like the love of a parent.

Hats off to you, college parent.  You’ve done it.

And, to those of us whom still have our kiddies at home… take heed, embrace the tantrums (holy #*!%), the dramas (holy #*!%), and the hugs.  We will blink and they will fly…and, if we’re lucky, our trees will grow~ firmly rooted, yet taller every year.

Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built upon him.  Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.  Colossians 2:7
